The Great Escape

For a long time, I felt it was something I wasn’t ready to talk about. I wasn’t ashamed, but I felt as though my confidence was still too low to put that out there. For me, it wasn’t the stigma that was attached to mental health that made me worry about speaking out – I was very open with people who knew me. It was because I still feared the person who made me feel that way (especially as they still make comments about me today!), despite no longer having to work with them. It is obvious that we would all prefer an immediate fix for all our problems but unfortunately, nothing in life works that way.

In fact, being on antidepressants is one of the most painful journeys anyone can go through. Let’s start with the side effects that your doctor never mentions. Continue reading What Your Psychiatrist Forgot to Tell You About Antidepressants

Phantom Acceptance of Mental Labels

With a large number of ‘mental illnesses’ enlisted in the DSM, differentiation between bad habits that have turned into destructive behaviours and actual diseases has been lost. Plus, the DSM does not tackle the chicken-egg dynamic, portraying certain ‘illnesses’ to have been caused solely by genetics and biochemical imbalances, which may not necessarily be the case. David Bailey, a hypnotherapist and life coach at SOAS believes that “…science mixed with the pseudo-science of psychology has also had some detrimental effects in perpetrating popular misconceptions. The idea that something like depression, anxiety or a phobia is an actual “thing” like a stomach ulcer. Rather than a conceptual framework for describing a manifestation of thought is, in [his] opinion, problematic.” Continue reading Phantom Acceptance of Mental Labels
